Side Quests for the Week No One Knows What Day It Is

You’ve eaten too many cookies.
Your schedule has collapsed into a blur of leftovers and vague plans.
Someone asked you what day it was, and you had to think about it.

Congratulations, adventurer. You have just entered The Time Between Campaigns Zone.

This is the quiet space between Christmas and the New Year. If you’re lucky, nothing urgent exists, but everything feels like it could. Now is the perfect time for low-stakes, low-effort RPG side quests. No prep. No pressure. Just a little bit of joy before the calendar flips.

Here are some optional side quests to pick up during the week no one knows what day it is.

Side Quest 1: Build a One-Room Dungeon You’ll Probably Never Use

Design a single room. That’s it. No maps beyond that.

Ask yourself:

  • What’s the room for?

  • Why is it abandoned?

  • What’s the one weird thing about it?

A cracked altar. A door that only opens if someone tells a secret. A chest that sighs dramatically when opened.

You don’t need stats. You don’t need balance. Just vibes.

Reward: +1 inspiration and the comforting lie that you’ll use it someday.

Side Quest 2: Roll a Character You’ll Never Play

This character exists purely for joy.

Give them:

  • A terrible name you love anyway (bonus points if it’s a pun)

  • A concept that would derail any serious campaign

  • A flaw that would make your GM sigh deeply and roll their eyes

Do not optimize. Do not justify. Just roll and vibe.

Reward: Emotional enrichment and a sudden urge to start a new campaign.

Side Quest 3: Write Three NPCs Future-You Will Thank You For

You don’t need a plot. Just people.

Create:

  1. A tavern keeper with a problem they won’t admit

  2. A rival adventurer who’s almost likable

  3. A mysterious stranger who definitely knows more than they’re saying

Give each one:

  • A name

  • A quirk (or a kink)

  • A secret

That’s it. Toss them in your notes and forget about them until the perfect moment.

Reward: A smug sense of preparedness later.

Side Quest 4: Sort Your Dice (If You Dare)

This is not for the faint of heart.

You may:

  • Alphabetize by color

  • Separate “lucky” dice from “suspicious” dice

  • Reassign dice to new sets based on ✨ vibes ✨

You may also uncover dice you forgot you owned. Or dice you don’t remember buying. Or dice that clearly followed you home on their own.

Reward: Peace, chaos, or a little bit of both.

Side Quest 5: Write the Campaign Recap No One Asked For

Take ten minutes and jot down:

  • Your favorite moment from the last campaign

  • The NPC the party adopted emotionally

  • The plan that absolutely should not have worked, but did

This isn’t homework. It’s a love letter to the table.

Reward: Nostalgia and renewed excitement for what comes next.

Side Quest 6: Do Absolutely Nothing (On Purpose)

Sit with your books.
Look at your minis.
Flip through a notebook you haven’t touched in months.

No prep. No productivity. No guilt.

Just exist in the hobby for a bit.

Reward: You actually remember why you love this game.

A New Year Means New Side Quests

January is right around the corner, and with it comes fresh adventures, new ideas, and more reasons to gather around the table.

If you’re looking for new inspiration, physical RPG loot, and original adventures to kick off the year, January is a perfect time to start something new.

Dungeon Crate subscriptions that begin in January deliver:

  • Original tabletop RPG adventures so you don’t have to come up with something new to run your group through

  • Dice, terrain, accessories, and game-enhancing loot like handy notepads

  • Gameplay tools designed to spark creativity, not overwhelm it

    No pressure. No rush.
Just another optional side quest — one that shows up at your castle doors each month.

Until then, enjoy the quiet week.
Roll something fun.
And don’t worry, no one actually knows what day it is anyway
