Unboxing October 2021 Dungeon Crate

Wondering what you get in a Dungeon Crate? It’s a mystery box so every month is different, which is part of the fun. We have a blast curating each month’s crate plus writing and illustrating our original one-shots, adventures, stat cards, traps, and more. Let’s unbox the October 2021 Dungeon Crate together so you get an idea of the kind of items we include.

October brings a chill in the air, colorful leaves crunching underfoot, and a scare around every corner. It’s the time of the year that we get spooky, adventurer. The Dungeon Crate crew loves all things horror and Halloween. For this month’s crate, we delve back into our horror roots with Cult Classics III. Here we’ve sewn together a series of three terrifying encounters with creatures that will make you shudder. We’ve also uncovered a pile of TTRPG loot we think you’re going to dig.

Cult Classics III by Rob Knobbe - Dungeon Crate Exclusive

2021 is our third year of celebrating all things spooky by creating original adventures based on horror movies. This year’s series of three creepy Dungeons & Dragons 5E encounters was written by Rob Knobbe, designed for third through fifth level characters, and is set in our world of Halcyon. With a few modifications, it can be used to play Pathfinder or any fantasy RPG.

Here’s what your party can expect:

Chapter 1. H’orrordeurvres: can your crew help a family of humble farmers repel alien monsters? You better hope so.

Chapter 2. The Curse of Dandyman: what’s the buzz about that old meadery? Oh honey, say Dandyman 13 times at midnight and you’ll find out.

Chapter 3.  The Witching Season: Kids are scary. Throw druids with wild ideas into the mix and they can be downright terrifying.

Skitter Monster Stat Card - Dungeon Crate Exclusive

Scaly, furry, and fanged? Watch out for these beasties. This original, illustrated card gives you 5E stats and a creepy visual reminder to watch your back. Use to play Cult Classics III and keep ‘em on a leash the rest of the time.

Honeyed Ooze Monster Stat Card - Dungeon Crate Exclusive

Chaotic evil honey that turns you to ooze but keeps your bones? No thanks! This card includes a full-color image of the ooze and stats for using it in 5E. Helpful for playing Cult Classics III.

Officially Licensed Rivendell Golden Moon Coin - Shire Post Mint

We’re stoked to have Shire Post Mint coins back in the crate. This family-run coining operation is based in Arkansas and has a high level of craftsmanship that we appreciate and we know you do too.

We chose a crescent moon-shaped Elvish Rivendell™ Golden Moon coin from the world of J. R. R. Tolkien. Each coin is struck from solid brass and features artwork from Dylan Craig and Woody Maringer. It depicts the Rivendell valley, flanked by waterfalls, containing the ancient trees of silver and gold and the three Silmarils, represented as stars. The text in Tengwar translates from Sindarin to "Elrond Peredhil, Lord of Rivendell, The Last Homely House East of the Sea" and includes the date, TA 2941, the year that Thorin and Company meet Elrond at Rivendell before continuing on to The Lonely Mountain.

2 Monster Miniatures - Reaper Miniatures

What’s better than one monster mini? Two! These two minis from Reaper are ready to paint or play straight from the box. Both are highly detailed, sculpted by a true artist, and made of plastic so if you’re crafty you can make modifications pretty easily. Use your two monster minis to play Cult Classics III or any other horrific RPG adventure in need of a baddie or two. These creepy plastic minis can be painted or used in gameplay as-is, straight from the box.

Everyone got Lon from the Bonesylvanians line, which was sculpted by Julie Guthrie. We thought it would make a great representation of a Lycanthrokid in Cult Classic III.

For your second mini, you either got Gug, the Eldritch Horror, which was sculpted by Michael Brower or a Bat Swarm, sculpted by Werner Klocke.

Glow-in-the-Dark 35mm D20 Dice - Metallic Dice Games

This jumbo D20 glows in the dark. Charge it up in the sunlight, or any light, and watch it glow as you roll. All colors glow in the dark. We got an assortment including classic bone, dark blue, pumpkin orange, and dark purple.

Set of 2 Bone Dice - Kaplow

Rattle them bones and let ‘em roll. Just for the month of October (or all year if you’re a necromancer) replace your D6s with this set of two 18mm ivory bone-look* dice.

*No creature’s bones were harvested to make these dice.

Bag o’ Bees

Sure, regular bees are infinitely helpful to our ecosystem, but not these babies. Use them in Cult Classics III to represent the BBG and then as dungeon decor.

Lagniappe

Lagniappe is an unexpected bonus (like a baker’s dozen is 13). We always try to put a little something extra in your crate. Whatever we haven’t listed on the insert is a little gift from us to you. This month it was a collection of fun items, and everyone received a handful of black glittery pom poms we thought would be fun to use in gameplay to represent skitter monsters.

Digital Crate Access

Everyone who gets the physical crate also receives access to our Digital Dungeon Crate. It includes pdfs of all the printed goodies, tokens, and extras to boot.

Each month we send members a secret code that gives them access. The secret code also gives members 10% off our online store all month long. Just shop from our online treasury, enter the code at check-out, and 10% disappears magically from your total.
